Living undocumented as a trans person

As Assistant News Editor for the Bay Area Reporter, the largest LGBTQ newspaper in the country, I wrote stories representing minority voices often overlooked by mainstream media. I covered politics, crime, the non-profit sector, and breaking news.

This is the story of a transgender woman living undocumented in the U.S. during the Trump era. I share her journey to refuge and the people who helped her get there.

“I’ve spent the last year, 8 months, and 7 days avoiding thinking of what her last moments on this earth were like and what must have gone through her mind as she gasped and choked and pushed through the smoke.”

The trial of the Ghost Ship warehouse fire that killed 36 people took an unprecedented turn when a judge denied the defendant’s plea deal after hearing the testimonies of the victims’ friends and families.

This story recounts that day in the courtroom and tells the stories of those affected.

An enduring bond

Showcasing my creative nonfiction writing outside of hard news, this story is about a non-profit helping children in Sonoma County find confidence in reading with the support of a furry friend. Published in the Petaluma Argus-Courier.
